Piazza del Duomo, Milan, Italy
by Kelvin Seet on Mar.18, 2009, under Travels
This was actually my second visit to this place, the first during my honeymoon when I did not really have the luxury of time to shoot the place as I was on a package tour, so this time I made sure I did!
Piazza Del Duomo is the most popular Square in Milan where the Duomo di Milano stands proudly and strikingly. When you first set eyes on this gothic cathedral, the stark contrast of its spiked facade against the classical structures (housing a shopping paradise nearby) creates a sense of childlike wonder in one’s spirit. The white marble structure is an astoundingly beautiful cathedral that you must really see with your own eyes to appreciate! I dare say that this is one of the most unique cathedrals you can ever see in Europe. There is a lot of history behind this square and the Milan Cathedral but I’m sure that you can find all the information you’ll need from Wikipedia, as with all the other destinations that I have written and photographed about.
During this photography trip, I was with 3 of my friends and we took a lot of photos of the church and its surroundings while there was still daylight. However, during sunset, we realised that the setting was much more atmospheric for better photos and shot even more! Hence, you’ll find that most of the photos published here would be shot during that time. I strongly encourage anyone who will be visiting the place, to be there during sunset as the lighting is simply wonderful for photography!
Here they are! Do leave me your comments! I do miss them!

Cimitero Monumentale, Milan, Italy
by Kelvin Seet on Mar.11, 2009, under Travels
This beautiful cemetery located in Milan, near Duomo, was a place that I only knew about when I was on my way to Milan. I was chatting with my colleague and after realising that I was into photography, he recommended that I drop by this place to shoot as it could be interesting for me.
Hence, after checking Google Earth for its rough location and getting a map, I took a tram to the cemetery and when I first set eyes on it, I was astounded by its size and the peaceful serenity that enveloped the whole area.
After setting foot on to the grounds of this memorable cemetery, I could sense an air of respect and seriousness that was appropriate for a place like this. Treading carefully while I took my photographs, I took the time to appreciate the various graves and their sculptures.
I saw many tombs that were family based with multiple names and dates and they were all very tastefully designed (well, its Italy!) by the artists and architects. Most of the graves were designed with artistic simplicity and quite a lot of sculptures really touched me with their sensitivity and gracefulness. There were quite a lot of built up crypts and some even came with air-conditioned prayer rooms. I was really struck with appreciative moments for the families of the dead as what I have seen in this cemetery, I would never see in Singapore. I guess its just a matter of space and culture between the two countries.
As I explored this vast grounds, I have shot many photos that I hope to convey the sense of what I felt in this place of memories. I have converted most of my shots into black and white to give a more appropriate feel and I do hope you’ll like them.
